Neil Burnside is an associate in the Tax & Trusts Group at Cassels, where he advises clients on corporate income tax and commodity tax matters. For income tax, his practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, cross-border transactions, private equity, Indigenous economic participation in energy projects, and tax issues arising from cross-border employee mobility. For commodity tax, he advises clients with respect to GST/HST, provincial sales taxes, customs, and excise taxes. He works with clients across industries, including renewable energy, technology and software, finance, and the resource sector.

Neil brings a practical, business minded perspective to tax planning and dispute resolution informed by his background as a P.Eng. and former consulting firm co-founder. His experience with business operations and engaging with government bodies, including the CRA and the City of Calgary, enhances his ability to help clients navigate complex tax challenges.

Neil received his JD from the University of Calgary in 2021 with distinction and holds a Common Law in French certification. He publishes regularly on tax topics and is completing the final year of the CPA In Depth Tax Program.
