Cassels Successfully Obtains Federal and Provincial Approvals for Marathon Palladium Project

11/30/2022

Cassels successfully acted for Generation Mining Limited to obtain Federal and Provincial environmental assessment approvals for the Marathon Palladium Copper Project, which is located 10 kilometres from Marathon, Ontario.

On November 30, 2022, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and The Honourable David Piccini, Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, each announced their governments’ approval for the Marathon Project, subject to conditions.

The Marathon Project was subject to a multi-year Federal and Provincial Joint Review Panel process. The Joint Review Panel conducted a public hearing in 2022, including 10 months of written filings and 19 oral hearing days. The Joint Review Panel considered input from more than 50 participants, including Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and six other Indigenous groups, as well as 10 Federal, Provincial and government agencies. The Marathon Project’s Joint Review Panel process was among the largest regulatory hearings of 2022.

Generation Mining will now proceed to obtain the necessary permits for construction and operation of the Marathon Project. The Government of Canada states that the Marathon Project will “strengthen Canada’s position as a global leader in the responsible and sustainable production of critical minerals.”
