Timon Li (he/him/his) is an associate in the Banking & Specialty Finance Group at Cassels. Timon’s practice focuses on domestic and cross-border debt finance, complex commercial transactions and corporate reorganizations. He routinely acts for Canadian and foreign banks, alternative capital providers, private equity sponsors, borrower groups and court-appointed officers on a broad range of matters, including multi-jurisdictional acquisition financings, sponsor leveraged buyouts and distressed M&A transactions.

Timon’s recent and notable representations include acting for:

Banking & Sponsor Finance

  • A Canadian Chartered Bank in connection with a $377 million syndicated financing in favour of a leading long-term care and retirement housing company
  • A Canadian Chartered Bank in connection with a $440 million syndicated financing in favour of a leading student housing company
  • A preeminent U.S. private equity sponsor in connection with credit facilities amounting to US$125 million and its concurrent acquisition of various Canadian assets pursuant to a stalking horse bid under the CCAA

Structured Finance & Public Markets

  • Stonebriar Commercial Finance in connection with its US$2 billion revolving syndicated credit facilities
  • A leading US structured finance company in connection with several issuances of asset-backed securities amounting to US$4 billion in the aggregate
  • Canopy Growth Corporation (TSX: WEED; NYSE: CGC) in its US$150 million registered direct offering of senior unsecured convertible debentures

Restructuring & Distressed Assets

  • Alvarez & Marsal in its role as court-appointed manager over syndicated collateral assets of the Pride Group Holdings companies
  • KSV Restructuring in its role as court-appointed receiver under the CCAA proceedings of the Stateview group of companies

Timon graduated from the J.D. program at the University of Toronto, where he served as an Associate Editor on the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review and volunteered with the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. Prior to law school, Timon graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (First-Class Honours) from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University, and completed a semester abroad at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
