Chris Selby (he/him/his) is a partner in the Litigation Group at Cassels. Chris has a varied commercial litigation and dispute resolution practice, with expertise in shareholder and partnership disputes, civil fraud, contract disputes, and defamation. He is known for his practical and efficient approach, emphasizing clients’ business-needs and strategic objectives.
Chris is experienced in navigating and resolving complex issues. His notable mandates include have included oppression proceedings, directors’ and officers’ liability matters, proceedings involving disclosure violations, disputes over corporate acquisitions, asset recovery following complex civil fraud, and price fixing class actions under the Competition Act.
Chris also regularly provides strategic advice to companies and their directors and officers in matters relating to allegations of corporate misconduct, including conducting internal investigations.
Chris frequently appears on behalf of clients in arbitration proceedings, at all levels of court in Ontario, and before various administrative tribunals. He also has a proven track record of resolving matters outside of court, including in many successful mediations.
Chris also has depth of experience acting for:
- Technology companies in contract disputes, including regarding services agreements
- Landlords and tenants in commercial leasing disputes
- Sports franchises and teams, leagues, and individual athletes in contract disputes and related litigation
- Educational and other public institutions in contract disputes, tendering, and RFP related matters
Chris is Deputy Chair of the firm’s National Litigation Group and frequently represents clients on a pro bono basis.
