Gavin Fitch, K.C. (he/him/his), is a senior partner in the Regulatory Group at Cassels. Gavin is an award-winning lawyer whose practice focuses on environmental, regulatory, energy permitting, and Indigenous law. A respected and trusted advisor, he provides practical, results-oriented advice to help clients navigate complex regulatory landscapes. Gavin is first and foremost an advocate, having spent literally hundreds of days in hearing rooms of energy and environmental tribunals, including the Alberta Utilities Commission, the Alberta Energy Regulator, the Natural Resources Conservation Board, and the Land and Property Rights Tribunal.
Gavin advises a diverse range of clients, including developers, energy producers, environmental monitoring agencies, governments, and landowners. Gavin’s experience includes mining projects, electric power facilities such as power plants (thermal, wind and solar), transmission lines, hydroelectric projects, and oil and gas infrastructure, including wells, pipelines, and processing facilities. While based in Alberta, Gavin has worked on projects across Canada, such as the Lower Churchill Falls Hydro project in Newfoundland and Labrador, mining projects in Ontario and BC, as well as a major port expansion project in BC.
In the area of Indigenous law, Gavin assists government agencies with matters including the duty to consult and land claims. Notably, he has served as Canada’s Chief Negotiator in treaty and self-government negotiations in British Columbia and Yukon.
Gavin’s practice is grounded in administrative law, spanning municipal, environmental, energy, regulatory, and Indigenous matters. His background in journalism and strong writing skills provide a distinct advantage in this area, where written advocacy plays a central role.
