Casey Chisick to Become First Canadian President of the Copyright Society

06/08/2020

At a meeting held on June 8, 2020, the trustees of the Copyright Society (formerly known as the Copyright Society of the USA) elected Casey Chisick as Vice President and President-Elect. Casey’s term as Vice President will continue until June 2022, at which time he will automatically become President for an additional two-year term. He will be the first Canadian – and, in fact, the first individual from outside the United States – to serve as President of the Society.

The Copyright Society is one of the world’s leading organizations devoted to copyright law awareness and education. Established in 1953, and with headquarters in New York City, the Society has over 1,000 members worldwide. Its mission is to foster interest in and advance the study and understanding of copyright law and its role in fostering creativity and the arts, the copyright industries, and the use and distribution of copyright-protected material through traditional and new media. Members of the Society include lawyers and professionals from the world’s leading IP firms and entertainment and media companies, top sole practitioners and in-house counsel, the authors of primary copyright law treatises, representatives of the U.S. Copyright Office and the World Intellectual Property Organization, publishers, academics, and law students.

Casey has been actively involved in the Copyright Society for almost 15 years and has served in various leadership capacities since 2012, including as an elected trustee, a member of the executive committee, and a two-year term as Treasurer. During that time, he has been instrumental in helping expand the activities of the Society beyond the United States, including by co-founding and co-chairing a highly successful International Chapter, spearheading its 2018 Annual Meeting in Toronto, and establishing the first two non-U.S. regional chapters of the Society, in Toronto (now co-chaired by Eric Mayzel) and Ottawa.
