On June 15, 2023, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (“MN-S”) announced the signing of an Impact Benefit Agreement between MN-S, including all seven Métis Locals of Northern Region II (together with MN–S, the “Métis Nation”) and NexGen Energy Ltd., in relation to NexGen’s Rook I uranium mine and mill development project. The agreement is thought to be the largest Métis impact benefit agreement in Canadian history.
The agreement provides Métis Nation support for the development of the Rook I project, commitments to collaborate in respect of environmental and social concerns, and the sharing of benefits. Royalty payment are included within the scope of benefits of the agreement which will allow NexGen and the Métis Nation to share in the wealth extracted from the Métis homeland.
