Liliya Baranova

Liliya Baranova (she/her/hers) is a member of the 2025-2026 Articling Student class at Cassels. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa, graduating cum laude.

While at the University of Ottawa, Liliya served as an intern for a non-profit organization where she researched Competition Act developments and prepared a policy brief analyzing UK Competition legislation through a Canadian lens. She worked as a research assistant on Canadian administrative law, focusing on emerging legal developments in the field. She also worked with OJEN, where she contributed to a public legal education project centered on tech-based solutions to legal challenges.

Liliya acted as a caseworker at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic in the Tenant division and as a caseworker at the uOttawa Startup Legal Clinic, providing legal support to early-stage ventures. Liliya held several leadership roles, including President of the International Law Students Association and Vice President of Finance for the Ottawa Legal Innovation Hub. She also mentored first-year students through the “Allies in Law” Mentorship Program.

Prior to law school, she worked as a Law Clerk at a Toronto-based private firm, focusing primarily on commercial litigation and corporate transactions. During her 1L summer, she worked as a Summer Student in the legal department at a financial lending company.

Outside of law, Liliya enjoys yoga and Pilates, trying new restaurants and traveling. She is fluent in Ukrainian and Russian.
