Matt Hammer (he/him/his) is an associate in the Regulatory and Aboriginal Law Groups at Cassels. Matt has extensive experience in the law and regulation of energy and natural resource development, including renewables decarbonization matters; Aboriginal rights and consultation; and environmental management. He advises renewables developers, cleantech companies, oil and gas producers, pipeline and midstream companies, mining companies, and electrical transmission, distribution and thermal generation companies.

Matt assists clients in obtaining approvals to develop major projects and in proceedings for compliance, land rights acquisition and compensation, the Crowns’ duty to consult, tariff design (including for utility decarbonization), and commercial transactions. He regularly deals with provincial and federal energy and environmental regulatory bodies across the country.

Matt also advises on regulatory, Aboriginal, and environmental aspects of commercial arrangements for project development, particularly in energy transition, including the renewables, carbon credit, and cleantech sectors.

Prior to joining Cassels, Matt was an associate at another national law firm and served as a judicial law clerk for the Court of Appeal of Alberta.
